It had been chance that he had made the connection to the date. Davis had been hard at work the past week, prepping the fields for the arrival of spring after a harsh winter, glad to be back at it in the fields. Winter had been a bit of a lonely month, without any crops to occupy his time and with Natly out of the house at Roscoe's five days a week, he'd taken to dropping by the Carpentry more days than not--and she'd driven him back off more days than not. He had used the excuse of making Natly lunch, and he had become something of an earnest cook through this front.
But it was the start of spring finally again, which meant a reprieve of her doting brother for Natly and a renewed sense of purpose for Davis. They sat down to a breakfast together and it was in a sleepy silence that Davis suddenly recalled the importance of the date beyond that of the spring planting season--it was the anniversary of Natly's arrival in Meadow View!
He had seemed a lot more excited about it than Natly did, but he sent her off with a mission to ask Roscoe to their home for dinner that night, a thank you that was more his than her's for taking her under his wing.
